Honduras ordered to track LGBT+ hate crimes
By Anna-Catherine Brigada, Reuters | June 29, 2021
Former Emerging Leader Fellow Kacey Mordecai spoke to Reuters about a new Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruling ordering that Honduras must now track and investigate hate crimes against LGBTQ+ people.
Honduras must track and investigate hate crimes against LGBT+ people, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) has ruled, after finding the state responsible for the death of a 26-year-old transgender woman shot dead by security forces.
The court also required the state to compensate the family of Vicky Hernandez, a sex worker killed during a 2009 state-imposed curfew following an army coup, and allow trans Hondurans to change their names and gender on official documents.
