Changing the Narrative on Gun Violence Reporting in Philadelphia

Dr. Jessica H. Beard currently serves as a Stoneleigh Fellow with the Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting. In this role, she is partnering with local news journalists to transform the way gun violence is reported in Philadelphia by deepening the media narrative and educating the public on its root causes and solutions.

Jessica is a trauma surgeon in one of Philadelphia’s busiest trauma centers, Temple University Hospital. She is also a widely published public health researcher who focuses on multi-disciplinary partnerships to solve complex public health problems, including gun violence. She serves as an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Director of Trauma Research, and Director of Global Surgery Research at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University.

Jessica holds a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University, an MD from Yale University, and a Master’s in Public Health from UC-Berkeley. She completed her general surgery residency at UC-San Francisco and surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.
