The Importance of Interdisciplinary Work

Former Emerging Leader Fellow Leigh Wilson-Hall shares her story about the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia that led to improvements in social risk screening.

Since joining Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) over five years ago, it has never been more clear to me how important social factors are to someone’s health. It is core to social work practice that what determines our health includes not just blood pressure, body mass index and risk of medical conditions, but also social factors like stable housing, access to healthy food and physical and psychological safety. For all of my colleagues working in a human service field, you know that this is true today more than ever with the weight of widespread loss from the pandemic, economic inequity and ongoing systemic racism.
