DayOneNotDayTwo

Project Summary

DayOneNotDayTwo works to transform cultural paradigms and empower young people to address the systemic inequities and social marginalization that impact Black communities through music and community organizing.

The Project

DayOneNotDayTwo aims to transform cultural paradigms and empower young people to address the systemic inequities and social marginalization that impact Black communities. Specifically, DayOneNotDayTwo helps youth to define their own narratives and advocate for themselves through music and community organizing.

  • Ascension: A 24-week workshop that uses art to model, imagine, and advocate for liberation.
  • Community AF!: A community apprentice fellowship that provides residents from North Philadelphia with a paid opportunity to learn solutions journalism and research-based community outreach strategies.
  • Delaware County Youth Participatory Defense Hub: A weekly meeting space open to young people who have been impacted by the criminal legal system as well as their families and communities. The hub provides systems education, court support, mitigation services, resource referrals, and restorative intervention programming to help young people achieve the best possible outcome from their system involvement.
  • Emotional Intelligence: A workshop series that enhances sensitivity to collective needs and promotes healing by fostering safe, respectful, and non-violent communities.

In recent years, DayOneNotDayTwo has significantly expanded its scope of work, including by:

  • Launching Delaware County’s first youth-focused participatory defense hub.
  • Developing a new branch of Philadelphia-focused transformative justice programming.
  • Creating the Neighbors News Network to publish the stories of young people who complete solutions-based journalism training.
  • Spearheading a national music tour to reach young people in cities across the country.
