Philadelphia’s Gun Violence Crisis: Deepening the Conversation

November 19, 2024

In November 2024, the Stoneleigh Foundation convened public, nonprofit, law enforcement, philanthropic, research, and community stakeholders from across the city to deepen and broaden the conversation about gun violence in Philadelphia.

The featured speakers—which included nine of Stoneleigh’s current Fellows and grantees—spotlighted many of the seldom-discussed facets of the crisis.  These included: the relationship between social media and gang violence, including how communities constructed online can influence harmful behavior offline; the interplay between gun violence and suicidality; the impact of greening and built environment investments on community violence; the role of restorative justice as a response to violent harms; and the perspectives of young people who make the decision to carry a firearm.

The convening also featured the premiere of two new documentaries produced by Love Now Media and DayOneNotDayTwo, which elevated the voices of young people and community leaders who are navigating the realities of community gun violence in Philadelphia.
