Ensuring a Policy Environment Supportive of Gender-affirming Care for Youth

By PolicyLab, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia | August 24, 2021

Stoneleigh Fellow Nadia Dowshen and her PolicyLab colleagues have published a new issue brief that highlights the lifesaving aspects of gender-affirming care for transgender and gender-diverse youth.

With the right care, transgender and gender-diverse youth can thrive, however this vulnerable population can often face discrimination and barriers in accessing health care, which could lead to significant harmful mental and physical outcomes. There is a great deal that can be done to foster a positive policy environment supportive of this population, including stopping efforts to ban gender-affirming care for minors.

This issue brief focuses on findings from recent research conducted by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia experts that highlights perspectives from youth and their caregivers on the lifesaving aspect of gender-affirming care. Our experts also offer recommendations to policymakers, payers and other stakeholders to ensure that gender-affirming care is accessible and affordable.
