Addressing the Holistic Needs of Newcomer Immigrant Youth

Julie Whalen McIntyre previously served as a Stoneleigh Emerging Leader Fellow at La Puerta Abierta. In this role, she expanded community services supporting newcomer immigrant students in Philadelphia to strengthen their engagement in school and community life.

Julie is an educational researcher with extensive experience working with immigrant students. She is nearing completion of her PhD in urban education at Temple University. Her dissertation examines teachers’ experiences implementing trauma-informed practices in urban public schools. Previously, Julie served as a middle and high school teacher and as development director and interim executive director at Providence Center, which provides educational programming to Puerto Rican and Latinx young people and families in North Philadelphia’s Fairhill community.

Julie holds a bachelor’s degree in urban and regional studies from Cornell University and an MSEd from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education.
