A Farewell Message from Julia Dutton

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

I have struggled to find the right words to express my feelings as I leave the foundation which has been such an important part of my life for almost five years. To say that I am proud, happy and sad…all at once…is true—but also inadequate! I have been so fortunate to have had this most unusual of opportunities—to create something almost from scratch with the great good fortune of having so many people willing to share their time, wisdom, experience and philosophies to bring it about!

It began with the vision and generosity of John and Chara Haas whose idea of creating a foundation to benefit children and youth was embedded in many years of discussion with friends and family. As we began I sought out the advice of many friends and colleagues who gave it freely…and although people often had conflicting ideas, the result was enhanced by that variety of opinion. And then I had the support and guidance of a great board and staff—whose openness to new ideas has made it all such an exciting journey. So mainly at this turning point I feel fortunate indeed to have had this incredible opportunity to work with so many good people to bring John and Chara’s vision to reality.

Over the past four years our program developed its focus on children and youth involved in multiple public systems. In deciding how we could make a difference in the lives of these children we initiated the fellowship program and sought out individuals whose work uses research to promote positive change in both practice and policy. These leaders—who range from new graduates to seasoned professionals—bring their own vision, commitment and passion to their work, and we are proud to support their efforts as they bridge the gaps between systems, provide data and change policy so that the children and youth served by these systems will lead happier, healthier and more productive lives.

Finally, while I am sad to say goodbye, I am happy that we have a strong and flourishing organization that will fulfill John and Chara’s dream of making a difference in the lives of those young people whose opportunities have been limited in so many different ways. I know that Stoneleigh Foundation with its great board and staff will continue to thrive under the capable new leadership of Cathy Weiss. Thank you all—and I wish you the very best as you continue to work for justice and equity for all children.

With warm regards,
